A Man Named Angel – by Kathryn Firl

On the evening of Jan 1, 2023, our son-in-law, Jimmy, called and said he and our daughter Paige had just gotten into a car accident and their car was likely totaled. They were driving back from Phoenix to San Antonio from the holidays and were about 3 minutes away from their Airbnb in El Paso where they had planned to stop for the night. It was a very scary accident and Paige was very shook up. The police gave them a ride to the Airbnb house. I could not sleep at all that night.

Jimmy found the phone number of the Bishop who was over the ward where the Airbnb was located and the Bishop and Elder’s Quorum President came over immediately, gave them priesthood blessings and took them to the ER to get checked. Thankfully no one was severely hurt but Paige had suffered a concussion and Jimmy was very sore all over and had a broken lens in his glasses. (He cannot see anything without his glasses!) Being so far away, all I could do was pray for them. My prayers were answered by the members of the ward there in El Paso.

The ward brought meals and food to them, helped them collect their belongings in their totaled car and took Jimmy to get new glasses. Every time Paige texted me about the help they were receiving, I would cry with grateful tears for the love that was being shown to them. The scripture in Mosiah 2:17 kept coming to my mind which states “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings, you are only in the service of your God.” The Elder’s quorum president had been in 3 serious accidents throughout his life and knew how Paige and Jimmy were feeling. He did not want to put them on a Greyhound bus in their condition. Neither did he want them to go half way with members from El Paso and meet members from San Antonio for the second half. He wanted to make sure they made it safely to their home. He wanted them to rest and recover a bit more before having them travel. He watched over and took care of them during the week. They stayed and rested till Thursday of that week and on Friday the Elder’s Quorum president and his wife drove them 8 hours to their home in San Antonio and then drove the 8 hours back to El Paso. What a great sacrifice it was for this kind man who had only met Paige and Jimmy that week! I was so grateful for him and his wife. When I asked Paige what his name was so I could send him a thank you card, she said his name was Angel. I thought that was a fitting name, for in my eyes he was an angel sent from God to help our daughter, Paige and her husband, Jimmy, during this trial.
