Help with the Floods: 2019 – by Stephani Price

All Member Stories, Service, Trials and Challenges

On the evening of 27 June 2019, record rainfall was recorded at the Rochester, Minnesota airport resulting in closure for several hours overnight. Fillmore, Olmsted and Dodge counties sustained flash flooding with the hardest hit area west of Rochester near Oxbow park. Internet video showed cattle from this area swept down the Middle Fork of the Zumbro river. Up to 7.5 inches fell in the Kasson area on June 28, resulting in considerable property damage though no lives were lost.

Eric Thronson of the Kasson Branch coordinated a small group of volunteers from the stake to assist with disaster relief efforts in the Kasson area. As a participant in VOAD or Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, The Church of Jesus Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teamed with three other agencies including International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), Team Rubicon (Veterans Service Organization) and NECHAMA (Jewish Response to Disaster). On July 13, approximately 25 volunteers worked in four teams to provide help to 6 families whose homes sustained water damage. Workers removed drywall and cleared damaged bathroom tubs or shower fixtures. Some helping for the first time learned how to safely dress in boots, gloves and masks and carry a considerable number of belongings out of flooded basements. Heat and humidity were high but satisfaction was felt by all who assisted, knowing that their help was needed and appreciated.
