Home Teaching and Brother Carol – by Bishop Stephen Sorensen

Many years ago during a priesthood leadership meeting we were taught that we need to invite all to come unto Christ. I was inspired to go to a man I home taught, Brother Carol, and invite him to return. He declined. Then later, he called me and asked me for help with regards to a non-Church issue. I later invited him to

attend tithing settlement and even though he didn’t pay tithing, he came. He came to a ward dinner and was impressed with how many people talked to him. In June of this year, I got a phone call from the Relief

Society President in my old branch telling me that Brother Carol came to church. When I talked to him he said, “Thank you for caring, for being there for me and most of all for not giving up on me.”

A week after I was called as bishop, my father-in-law died.  Brother Carol came from Stoughton to the funeral. He said, “You were here for me when I needed it and now with the death of your father-in-law, I am here for you.”

D&C 18: 10, 15: “Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God.” “And if it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people and bring, save it be one soul unto me, how great will be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father!”

I now have an idea of what that means; I was his home teacher for 13 years. You have to be consistent in your home teaching.
