In April 2012, a group of medical professionals went to Peru on a medical mission. There were two teams–one for ophthalmology and one for ENT. I was working with the ENT group. We did tonsillectomies, ear surgeries, and other minor head/neck procedures. Tuesday afternoon we were done with surgeries and the doctors invited me to join them on rounds. I have rarely gone on rounds as I was busy getting things ready for the next day. This day, I was free and able to go. We saw a couple of patients and then the doctors noticed some blood dribbling from the mouth of one of the tonsil patients. They looked in the back of the throat and saw a blood clot. She needed to go back to surgery to have it cauterized. Because I was there, I was able to go back to the operating rooms and let everyone know that we had a patient coming back very soon. I had the instruments all ready for the next day and anesthesia got their things together. The patient was there in about ten minutes. We got the bleeding stopped and the patient did well after that. I truly feel that the Lord had directed me to go on rounds so I was in the right place at the right time to get this girl back to the OR as soon as possible. It’s one of those things that you can look back on and see, but at the time, you just do what you’ve been trained to do–give the best care possible as soon as you can. I’m glad that I was an instrument that the Lord could use in this instance to keep one of his daughters from having a miserable night and having to come back to surgery the next day.
